Art Reef by Vhils

If we choose the Earth, we must think about the sea.

To care is to create. The Art Reef project combines the creative power of Vhils with the creative power of nature. It places art at the service of raising awareness for the protection of the oceans. The 13 pieces of this intervention were created from materials that, in the past, generated the electricity that warmed and illuminated us.

Materials taken from EDP’s coal-fired power plants, which today aims to replace energy production from fossil sources with renewable technologies. The artist transformed these materials into works of art and, in turn, over time, nature will transform the artworks into an underwater ecosystem of life.

This intervention is a dialogue between art and nature, a principle of re-creation, in the context of reusing materials—something recurrent in Vhils’ work—through which he reinterprets them and gives them artistic meaning and a new function. A dialogue aligned with EDP’s commitment to choose the path of decarbonisation. To choose art as inspiration and a means of social influence. To choose the Earth.
