Paderne Castle

Paderne Castle is one of the most important historical monuments in the municipality of Albufeira and belongs to the exclusive group of seven castles represented on the Portuguese flag.

Built in the 12th century during the Islamic period, this rammed-earth military castle is a remarkable example of Almohad defensive architecture in Portugal, standing out for its strategic location above the Ribeira de Quarteira valley.

Classified as a National Monument, Paderne Castle is one of the most significant testimonies to Islamic presence in the Algarve and a landmark of the region’s historical and archaeological heritage.
