Paderne Medieval Bridge

Paderne Medieval Bridge

The Paderne Medieval Bridge is one of the most emblematic examples of the parish’s historic heritage, spanning the Ribeira de Quarteira near Paderne Castle. Despite its popular designation, the current structure is believed to date from the medieval period, possibly built upon older foundations.

Comprising three masonry arches and forming part of the historic access route to the castle, the bridge played a strategic role for centuries in connecting the Algarve’s inland and coastal areas. It underwent significant reconstruction works in 1771, a date still visible inscribed above the central arch.

Due to its historical, architectural, and scenic significance, the Paderne Medieval Bridge is one of the most valuable heritage elements in the inland area of the municipality of Albufeira.
