Porta de Sant’Ana

Porta de Sant’Ana

Porta de Sant’Ana was one of the three original gates of Albufeira Castle, forming part of the access and defensive system of the city’s former medieval fortification.

Its name derives from the fact that it gave access to the original Chapel of Sant’Ana, which disappeared following the 1755 earthquake that destroyed much of Albufeira’s urban and religious heritage.

From the late 18th century onwards, devotion to Sant’Ana began to take place in the present-day chapel of the same name, preserving the religious tradition associated with this historic site.
