Hermitage of São Sebastião

Hermitage of São Sebastião

The Hermitage of São Sebastião in Guia is an important example of the parish’s religious heritage, likely dating from the early 17th century and closely linked to popular devotion to Saint Sebastian, traditionally regarded as protector against epidemics and plague.

The building suffered significant damage during the 1755 earthquake and was rebuilt a few years later, preserving its spiritual importance within the local community. Inside, particular note is given to the 17th-century image of Saint Sebastian associated with the historic devotion of Guia’s population.

Due to its historical, religious, and identity value, the hermitage stands as an important testimony to Guia’s spiritual and heritage traditions.
